Sam was a friend before he became my brother-in-law before he lost his battle to leukemia.
I met Sam in the summer of 1984 on the sands of Virginia Beach.
I left that hour meeting and the person I was with told me that Sam was in remission from childhood leukemia. Four years later, I met Sam when I came to the University of Virginia.
He rushed me at his fraternity, Phi Ep, and remembered me from our chance meeting at the beach.
